Gordon D. Boyd

Gordon Dean Boyd, 94, passed away on June 13, 2026, in Cozad, Nebraska. A lifelong Montanan at heart, dedicated National Park Service ranger, educator, coach, athlete, horseman, and devoted husband, Gordon lived a rich and adventurous life defined by service to his country, love of the outdoors, and deep family ties.

Born to William H. Boyd and Marjorie M. (Snyder) Boyd on October 16, 1931, in Big Timber, Montana, Gordon spent his early years on his family’s homestead northeast of town along Sourdough Creek. There he joined his siblings Bernice, Elaine, and Donald. In 1934, the family moved into Big Timber itself. He attended Sweet Grass County High School, where he was a proud member of the Sheepherders basketball team.

Gordon excelled in athletics. He graduated from Eastern Montana College in Billings as a three-sport athlete in track, basketball, and baseball. Later, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where his training as a medic took him to Germany for two years. Upon returning, he lived with his sister Bernice’s family in Bozeman while completing his Masters degree at Montana State University. He then began his teaching and coaching career at Gardiner High School in Montana.

His proximity to Yellowstone National Park shaped the next chapter of his life. Gordon started as a Seasonal Ranger during summer vacations and soon transitioned to full-time duty. He served in several posts across Yellowstone, rising to the rank of District Ranger. It was there that he met, during a memorable toboggan crash, and married Beverly Elizabeth Laird in a ceremony at the Chapel of the Transfiguration in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in 1963.

Together, Gordon and Beverly shared a remarkable career and life of adventure. Subsequent assignments took them to Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park in California, Olympic National Park in Washington, and Grand Coulee National Recreation Area (Lake Roosevelt). Gordon retired from the National Park Service in 1988, and they returned to their home in Port Angeles, Washington.

The persistent rainy weather of the Pacific Northwest eventually drew them back to Gordon’s native Montana. They lived briefly near Gardiner before returning to his childhood home in Big Timber. In retirement, they alternated summers in Montana with winters traveling in their motor home through the southwestern deserts. They acquired a second home in Overton, Nevada, where they spent many happy winters roaming the desert and exploring the Lake Mead area.

After Beverly’s passing in 2014, Gordon continued spending winters in the desert, where he was joined by his nephew Allen Porter and wife Becky, who had purchased a home in nearby Mesquite, Nevada. Gordon’s advancing age and a mild stroke eventually ended his desert adventures. Beverly’s family, the Lairds, lovingly arranged his care in an assisted living facility in Cozad, Nebraska. They faithfully transported him back and forth to Big Timber each summer for as long as he was able. He made his final trip to his beloved desert in February 2023.

Gordon cannot be remembered without mentioning his passions for fishing and horses. He lived where he could fish, and his little blue boat saw plenty of use—salmon in the waters near Port Angeles, walleyes at Grand Coulee, striped bass on Lake Mead, and trout in Montana’s rivers and lakes. In his teens, he became a superb horse handler, spending two summers working for his brother-in-law, champion bronc rider Jack Porter. Gordon took the green horses Jack had started and rode them out across the breaks and Ponderosa ridges. He stated that riding all day was the best job he ever had. Those riding skills served him well throughout his ranger career, where he became renowned as a horseman and trail packer.

Gordon Boyd is survived by his nephews: Larry Lane of Minot ND, Allen Porter (Becky) of Mesquite NV, Dan Lane (Nancy) of Osburn ID, and Bill Boyd (Jane) of Bozeman MT, cousin Michael Boyd (Ritambhara) of Orcas Island WA, Kari Boyd Gardiner of WA, along with other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Bernice Porter (Ralph), Elaine Lane Casper (Harry Lane and Kenneth Casper), and Donald Boyd (Dolly); and his nephew Larry Lane’s wife, Maxine. Survivors from his late wife Beverly’s family include: nieces and nephews, Cynthia (PJ) Jacobson, Nancy Laird, Patrick (Barbara) Laird, Tom (Pam) Laird, all of Cozad, Ann (Bruce) Bergman of Kearney and Todd (Pam) Laird of Manhattan,KS, LeaAnn (Ron) Stephenson, Melissa (Eric) Raastad, sister-in-law Bobbi Laird, all of Lincoln, along with numerous great nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by friends from the Park Service, the community of Big Timber, Montana, and everyone who shared a forest trail, lakeshore, or campground with him.
