Richard Sabin

April 29, 1937 — November 13, 2015

Richard 'Dick' Dean Sabin, age 78 of Cozad, passed away November 13, 2015 at Kearney Regional Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. Dick was born on April 29, 1937 to Charles and Sibyl Sabin in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Dick grew up with an independent spirit and a love for the hay business in the Platte Valley. He excelled at buying and trading, from a minnow business at the river to making his own wagon to haul his first bale of hay. He loved to tell stories of his favorite horse named "Star" and the adventures they had at the river. Dick liked to say with a chuckle that he did go through school..."in the front door and out the back". When he learned to drive a 1935 Ford at the age of 13, he paid so many fines for hotrodding around the neighborhood that he would joke about having paid for all the streetlights in 'Gothenburg. One of the things that helped Dick growing up was the time he spent at Boys Training School in Kearney. He worked in the laundry until they realized his skill at running a hay baler, and he made life¬long friends and learned many life lessons while there. Dick married the love of his life, Lucille Mae Dishman, on April 29°, 1955. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. To this union three children were born; Dixie, Jerry, and Pammy. Dick and Lucy spent many happy years together running a successful hay trucking business. Dick loved racing Ford stock-cars and had many awards and trophies through the years. He was happy when his son and grandsons showed an interest in racing also. He always had a sense of pride for his trucks and vehicles. Dick was never impressed with fanatical religion, but always drawn to a true heart, just like Jesus. Dick enjoyed family, his dog Chipper, and always kept his sense of humor. In spite of recent failing health, he continued to operate his trucking business and race his stock car. Dick was preceded in death by an infant sister, Peggy; his parents, Charles and Sibyl; a brother, Joe Sabin; son-in-law, Steve Aitken; and great-grandson, Tyler Aitken. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lucy, of Cozad; their children, Dixie (the late Steve Aitken) Aitken, of Cozad; Jerry (Chris) Sabin of North Platte; Pam (Mitch) Buckley, of Gothenburg; brothers Tony (Jean) Sabin, of Gothenburg, Dan (Marilyn) Sabin, of Lexington, Jim (June) Sabin, of Gothenburg, Rod (Lori) Sabin, Gothenburg; sisters Pat (Henry) Dishman, Gothenburg, Janice (Bobby) Linden, Cozad, Conny (Doug) Sitorius, Gothenburg, and Darla (Les) Pelzer, Gothenburg; grandchildren, Steve (Stacy) Aitken, Shannon Aitken, Kristy (Jason) Strohmyer, Bob (Lizette) Buckley, Brandon (LeAnn) Buckley, Rachel (Justin) Carter, Josh (Alisha) Sabin; great-grandchildren, Christopher Strohmyer, Brittney Aitken, Blake Aitken, Trinity Sabin and Wesley Sabin; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. A memorial has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com.
