Rolland "Bud" Hood

Rolland "Bud" Hood, age 91 of Cozad, passed away December 7, 2014 at Cozad Community Hospital. Rolland was born November 6, 1923 in Keith County, Nebraska to Thomas and Josephine (Vanek) Hood. He was raised on a farm and ranch in the Ogallala and Lewellen areas. Rolland served in the US Navy on aircraft carrier USS Sitko during WWII. On July 20, 1947, Rolland married Grace Epping at Ogallala, Nebraska. The couple resided at Ogallala, Nebraska and worked for Shilz Cattle Company near Arthur and Ogallala. In 1950 the couple moved to the lower 96 Ranch south of Brady, NE to work on the ranch. In 1955, Rolland and Grace moved to Cozad where they made their home until retirement. Rolland went to work in excavating and land leveling in the Cozad area with his brother, Leonard. In 1980 Rolland purchased a few trucks from Weber Transfer and started Rolland Hood & Sons Trucking, which is still operated today as Hood & Sons by his son David Hood. Rolland enjoyed fishing and having coffee with friends. Rolland was preceded in death by his wife Grace; 9 brothers and sisters; his parents and step-mother Selma Hood. Survivors include sons David Hood and Randy Hood both of Cozad; daughter Patricia (Howard) Knapp of North Platte; sister Mary Patricia Krueger of Rolla, MO; sister-in-law Nona Hood of Cozad; grandchildren, Scott Burtle of Lincoln, Ben Burtle of Winter Haven, FL, Jon Knapp of North Platte, Pam Knapp of Grand Island, Thomas Knapp of North Platte, Stephanie Hood of New York, Matt Hood of Cozad and Andy Hood of Cozad; 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services will be held Friday, December 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Smith officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, NE. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 at Berryman Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
