Lawrence "Larry" Maack

Lawrence "Larry" Maack, age 94 of Cozad, passed away at his home, December 30, 2013. Larry was born November 16, 1919 north of Cozad, Nebraska to Frank and Clara (Kampfe) Maack. Larry graduated from Cozad High School in 1937. Following graduation, Larry went to work on family farm. In 1941, Larry was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during WWII. Larry was sent to school at Fort Warren, WY to become a mechanic. He was then sent to Cordova, AK on detached service and to Aberdeen, MD where he overhauled tanks. Larry was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in March of 1945. On October 22, 1945, Larry married Jessie Nunley at Catlettsburg, KY. Larry and Jessie made their home north of Cozad where they farmed and ranched and raised Jessie's nephew Larry Browning from the age of 5. Following his retirement in 1985, Larry and Jessie moved to a home in town. Larry served as secretary for Walnut Grove Telephone Co., Farmers Elevator in Cozad, and NFO. He was a chairman for Gillan precinct ASCS for a number of years. Larry also served a term as president at Cozad Country Club. After retirement, Larry and Jessie spent their winters in Arizona City playing golf. Larry enjoyed woodcarving and playing cards at Cozad Country Club. Larry was a proud member of the VFW, American Legion, and a charter member of the Cozad Elks Lodge #2250. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Jessie; Larry Browning; 2 brothers, Roy and Clarence; 3 sisters Mildred Maack, Bernice Norris and Lucille Rasmussen. Survivors include his granddaughter Ashley Browning of Quarryville, PA; great grandson Layne; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Memorials are suggested to the Cozad Country Club and Cozad Grand Generation Center. Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Funeral services will be Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at Cozad United Methodist Church with Pastor Doug Smith officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Cozad Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home. Berryman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
