Nova L. Walker

April 20, 1963 — February 28, 2013

Nova Walker, age 49 of Cozad, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Cozad after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. Nova was born April 20, 1963 at Cozad, Nebraska to John and Shirley (Adle) Freeman. She attended Cozad High School. On April 9, 1979, she married William ""Bill"" Walker in Mississippi. The couple made their home in Cozad where she began work at SouthView Manor as a CNA. Nova continued her education while working at the care home, and eventually worked her way into the Dietary Management position. After about 10 years, Nova began work at Burkinks Foods where she became a supervisor. She also drove the school bus for the Cozad school system. In 1993, Nova and Bill moved to Eddyville where she drove the local school bus and also served as an EMT for the local rescue squad. They would later move to Osceola to be close to family, eventually returning to Cozad in January of 2013. Faith was the backbone of Nova""s life, and it was her self-proclaimed goal in life to let others know that Jesus loves them through encouragement and time spent with others. She made a conscious effort to live her faith daily, even when her health left her with plenty of things she could have complained about. She volunteered as a Salvation Army bell ringer, and absolutely loved working with kids; exemplified by the special efforts she made travelling to local schools and raising awareness of bullying among young students by means of puppets. She had also volunteered as an EMT for both the Cozad and Eddyville rescue squads. While Nova was devout in her spiritual life, in the context of family life, she was a wonderful prankster and always made people laugh with her great sense of humor and easy smile. Nova deeply enjoyed socializing, and when she and Bill returned to Cozad, she loved to spend time at the coffee shop with friends. Nova was also a wonderful grandmother, and loved every minute spent with her 3 grandchildren. A memorial has been established in her memory. Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Nova was preceded in death by her parents; son, Shane; and brother, Nolan Freeman. Survivors include her husband, Bill Walker of Cozad; daughter, Tanya (James) Pearson of Osceola; 2 sons, Talon Walker (Angela Perrin) and William L. Walker of Osceola; 3 grandchildren, Tana, Zoey and Zayden; 2 brothers, Rick (Linna) Freeman of Seattle, WA and Jesse (Katrina) Freeman of Jay, OK; 3 sisters, Alicia Heiden of LaVista, Bonnie Jeanne (Wesley) Flaming of Jay, OK and Dawn (Ben) Hosterman of Tulsa, OK and many other relatives and friends. Services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in Cozad with Pastor Rodney Mohler officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, north of Cozad. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
