Rose J. Herrick

Rose J. Herrick, age 99 of Eustis, passed away May 26, 2013 at the Elwood Care Center. Rose was born July 23, 1913 at Eustis, Nebraska to William and Caroline (Ebele) Janus. Rose graduated from Eustis High School. Following high school, Rose became a teacher and taught rural school northwest of Eustis. After a few years of teaching, Rose decided to move to Chicago with her sister, Lucy. Rose and Lucy lived and worked together in Chicago for several years. On April 24, 1937, Rose married Joseph Herrick in Chicago, and the couple continued to reside in the area their entire married lives. Rose got a job working at Sears, and remained with the store until her eventual retirement. Mr. Herrick preceded Rose in death in 2001. Despite living in Chicago for so many years, Rose had maintained a connection to her roots in Eustis; and in 2006, she returned to Eustis to be closer to family. Rose was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, and only consented to having DISH service so that she could watch her beloved team play. While in Chicago, Rose lived very close to Wrigley Field, but never attended any of the games in person. While Rose lived nearly an entire century, she was content to never own a car or obtain a driver""s license. She enjoyed her French Poodle, and always maintained a close relationship with her sister, Lucy. In addition to her husband, Rose was preceded in death by her parents; 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Rose is survived by several nieces and nephews; her St. John""s Lutheran Church family; and many other friends. A memorial has been established in her memory. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John""s Lutheran Church in Eustis with Pastor Harold Laursen officiating. Inurnment will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
